다락방으로 이어진 사다리에 접근하려 시도한 인물은 사다리에 오르는 것이 불가능하다고 인식하게 된다. 특정 사례에서 이 사다리에 접근하여 사다리를 오르는 데 성공했다고 해도 항상 조사 결과는 그러한 인물이 실제로 접근하지 않았다는 것으로 판명되었다. 현 시점에서 원인은 알 수 없다. 또 이 현상이 실제로 존재하는 지도 미지수이다. 이에 관한 연구가 진행중이다.
